The polite and thoughtful Horikawa Kunihiro and the short tempered yet skillful Izuminokami Kanesada, who served the same master, confront the invading army along with a lively gang of other warriors including Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki, Yagen Toushirou, Tombokiri, and Tsurumaru Kuninaga.

As the fate of history lies in these hero’s hands, what meets the blade is yet to be uncovered…

Not long after watching Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, a fellow ani-blogger told me about a new Touken Ranbu series, this new series would be more action focus, unlike Hanamaru, which was more of a Slice of life series. Also the main lead would be different. The action anime fan in me was quite interested, thus I was really looking forward to watch it.

Before anything, I need to say I really enjoy the series, even if there was a lot of flaws, with the main one (in my opinion) being the lack of a proper plot. Not saying there is not story, there is something that look like a storyline, however you can’t really tell which direction the show want to take. We know against what/who they are directly fighting, The Time Retrograde Army, we also know why they are fighting them, but we don’t know what is the exact goal of the army other than changing the History nor we know who is sending/controlling them. In other word we don’t have a villain, a final boss, we only have some zombie warrior screwing different Japanese era. The why, I guess only the one who played the game could answer that….at least I think.

An other problem with the series is the cast, at least the way the character were written, cause on the visual side I was just blown away (and this is one of the good point). Touken Ranbu is the type of series where we could find some kind of character development, however we have none of that, we only have character going along the even, without big change. Yes we have Horikawa Kunihiro who decide to defect from the second unit, but only for Izuminokami Kanesada sake, he doesn’t even do it for himself. If he would have done it for himself, cause he wanted to part away from Kanesada, it would have made a change in his character, since both swords always fought side by side until the day before Hijitaka‘s death (at least according to the series). But no Horikawa only did that cause apparently that is what Kanesada really wanted deep inside.

To summary, Katsugeki / Touken Randu, is an action anime series, with no decent plot and character who are just following the event without really trying to understand them. It’s a really good thing the visual is stunning, plus the boys are really hot, Izuminokami Kanesada is one of the most beautiful creature (sorry Aomine) I really have the feeling Ufotable, the studio producing the series, give most of the budget to the visual department and almost nothing to the script writers.

After saying all this, I really look like someone who didn’t enjoyed the series, but I really enjoyed it. Despite all it’s weakness, the show was one of my favorite of the season. Even if the character doesn’t change through the series, despite the event, I still get attached to them. I still got worried about them being hurt or just stubborn. No matter the flaws a series can have, if I’m enjoying what I’m seeing, I’m happy with what have. Of course the show had the potential to be way better.

Would I recommend the series? yes however I would warn the people to not expect any great development.

  1. That lack of plot development really hurt my enjoyment of the show. They desperately needed a better script for this to actually show off all those pretty visuals to far better affect.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
