Mel’s Seasonal Round-Up, Winter 2018

Can’t believe twelves weeks already pass, we are already in April, I really didn’t saw the three first months of 2018 passing.
If we are now in April, that’s mean the Winter season is over and the Spring season is coming real soon, this also mean it’s time for the seasonal round-up.

Before we start the main topic, I have  let you know, this will be the last seasonal round-up I will do since I’m not planning to watch a lot of season series in the future other than the one I’m really looking forward to. I will explain you more in the Spring Watch List post that will eventually come.

Now the Round-up…

I was quite amazed by myself, I managed to keep up will more than the half of the series I planned to watch, I only dropped three titles be proud of me.

First let’s take a look at watch list

  • Black Clover
  • Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc
  • Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody
  • Devilman Crybaby
  • Garo: Vanishing Line
  • Record of the Grancrest War
  • Kokkoku
  • The Ancient Magus’ Bride
  • How to Keep a Mummy
  • Sanrio Boys
  • Violet Evergarden
  • Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru
  • Hakumei to Mikochi
  • Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens
  • Darling in the Franxx

Fifteen shows is quite a lot, no wonder I didn’t had time to do anything on my Saturday since I watched most of them on that day (thank to my work schedule)

As I did with the Fall Round-Up, I will start with the series I dropped..

Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody,
I was quite of looking forward to it since I really like the synopsis, it was reminding me a little bit of SAO (series that I enjoyed) however, there was a lot of thing that make me want to drop it, first the inconsistency of the visual. Some shoot was really nicely done, while other give me the feeling the illustrator forgot was depth mean. Plus I was wondering which direction they will take since nothing seems to make much sense to me, after 3 episode (I think can’t remember) I decide to end my suffering and drop the show. Maybe it got better later, but I’m not curious enough to see that for myself

Kokkoku,
Not cause the show was bad, in fact I really enjoyed the few episode I watched, however I couldn’t watch it legally and my laptop was at risk each time I was watching it. Since I love my laptop more than the series, I decide to drop it in the hope I could eventually watch it legally. This is probably why I read most of the episode review I could find on it. (thanks Karandi you did a great job)

Last not least, Record of the Grancrest,
I was looking forward to that series, I like fantasy stop and it seems to be the kind of fantasy series I would like, however more the series was going more I was wondering if it was worth to keep up with it, but then I realize that on the nine episode I watched so far, I really like only one of them. This was a good enough reason for me to let it go, why continue something I don’t fully enjoy? But again a part of me was curious about what will happen and that is why I decide to read ( and will probably continue) episode review.

Now that you know which show I dropped, let’s take a look at the one I finished

Devilman Crybaby,
I seriously still don’t know how I feel about the series, I feel like I will have to rewatch it before write the review. But I still enjoyed it, if not I will not have finish it.

Garo: Vanishing Line,
This was probably one of my favorite show. I haven’t watch anything related to it, so I kind of jump in the Garo universe. Now the series is over I will certainly look to see if I can watch the other series.
This show gave me a lot of different feels and introduced me to some great characters like Sword, Sophie, Luke and Gina…not gonna lie Bishop was also a fun and interesting character.
I love the BGM and the general visual, plus the fighting scene were awesome.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride,
This is an other series I really enjoyed (but not as much as Garo), great visual and BGM and a lot of interesting character. I was quite of sad when it ended, since I wanted more of it.

How to Keep a Mummy,
OMG afgfhfgfffgh I can’t even put into real word how cute that series is, I just love it, it was just beyond adorable. I didn’t expect much from it other than being a cute show, I surely didn’t expect to fall head over heels for a little mummy called Mii-Kun, after each episode I was wondering what next cute thing Mii would do.
And even if I mainly watched for Mii, Tazuki still hold a special place in my heart.

Sanrio Boys,
I seriously wonder how the hell I did to watch it until the end, yes the boys are cute and handsome, but I really had the feeling to watch 24 mins long advertisement for Sanrio merchandise.

Violet Evergarden,
This is not the typical series I will go for, but the visual won be over and I don’t regret it even if for the most part of the series we are watching an emotionless young woman learning how to act like a normal human being.

Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru,
Gonna be completely honest with you, I pushed back watching the last episode as much as I can simply cause I refused saying farewell to my precious boys sword. The show might not have an actual plot, however the character this grow over the course of the series.

Hakumei to Mikochi,
This was an other cute show without plot, but I love the visual, it reminded me of a fairy tales book. I grew attached to those tiny little girls and I hope seeing more of them in the future.

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens,
Why How to Keep a Mummy, Hakata Tonkostu Ramens is my other pleasant surprise of the Winter season, I like pretty much all the character, even the bad one (with some exception of course), compare to the other show I watched this season, it was a really new natural looking visual and I really like that. I loved watching the character interact with each other, their bickering made me smile. Plus the BGM was great.

Time to look at the titles that will carry over the next season(s)

Darling in the Franxx,
It took me time to get into it, and even now I’m wondering if I will be able to get through the series. But, now I get some interest into the characters, plus the characters that I found really annoying in the beginning, became less annoying.

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc,
I’m a big nostalgic, CCS was the first anime I watched knowing it was an anime, plus my first anime crush is on of the character of the show. The formula of the series didn’t change, Sakura still running after card but I don’t care I still enjoy the series and I’m always looking forward the next episode, plus Sakura is still adorable in the costume Tomoyo makes for her.

Black Clover,
This received some hate, mainly the main character, Screaming Asta. Even if at first I found him annoying af, I keep up with it, and now I have to say while I’m not used to his voice, I can bear with it. There is new character that was introduced since the Fall round-up, new character that I like, like the Wizard King and I hope I will continue to like him. I like his IDGAF attitude and the fact he is a little bit nerdy over new magical thing.

**********

The Winter 2018 season gave me a lot of good title and I’m pretty sure Spring would have brought me even more, however I will not look too much into what the Spring 2018 have to offer and only watch the two show that I’m really looking forward to, if you wanna know which are those series, keep and eyes for the Spring Watch List that will be post in the next round-up.

~ Thank you for reading ~

See You Next Time

  1. Found your blog thru a BUNCH of anibloggers, and thanks to you and Karandi, I have a rundown of stuff to look out for in the Winter season thay I missed during my schooling.

Damn shame you can’t watch Kokkoku, I feel you. Anime is also hard to watch legally in my country, so I’ve been stuck on Netflix shows or Crunchyroll stuff.

    • I welcome to my blog!!

I would have like being able to finish it, at least there was some great post about it.
I’m lucky enough to be able to subscribe to more but it’s still a pain, I dream of a day where all company will work together and offer a streaming service available for everyone without being ridiculously expensive.
