I came across How to Keep a Mummy while I was browsing the upcoming anime series on MAL for the anime Winter season 2018. Reading the synopsis, I thought this would be a cute series to look up, without expecting anything from it. I know, we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but I really had that feeling will be on the cute side by looking at the artwork and the promotional video pretty much confirmed that feeling.

I wasn’t really expecting nothing from it, really nothing, however this series managed to become one of my favorite from the winter season, if not my favorite.

From episode 1, with our first encounter with Mii-kun our little mummy, I was sold, I felt for that little thing begging for attention. Each new episode melted my heart a little bit more, I was always looking forward the next cute thing Mii-kun would do. Cause yes this show have nothing more to offer than cute pint-size supernatural critters doing cute stuff, and it’s a good thing those were there, cause if we were counting only one the human cast to hold the show, not sure we would have the same result, however I can’t say the same if the human wasn’t around. While they didn’t brought anything to the series, they still have their role to play since the cutest moment from the show are between the critter and their owner/dad/master (still haven’t figured out which term I should use). But even if the human cast of the show wasn’t the most significant part, they still had their own personality, even if those personality was quite cliché.

Since the nature of the series, don’t expect to find anything that look like an actual storyline, even if we have recurrent element coming from the past of two of the character. This series is not the type of series where you will have major character development, from the beginning to the end the main cast pretty much remains the same, at one exception (It’s scary what the lack of a proper sleep might make you do)

While the visual design of the show is nothing more than decent, I still like it, How to keep a Mummy is certainly not a show you watched for the complexity of the background design, however the fact there wasn’t too much to look in each episode help to focus on what was the most important the little supernatural creature. Even their design was quite minimalistic, they look like their design was inspired by toddler’s drawings.

In general How to Keep a Mummy is a cute show that have nothing more to offer other than cute little creature doing cute thing.
