Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online

I one of the people who enjoyed the Sword Art Online earlier series, was the male lead look overpowered and yes it should have more be sold as a harem anime (even if I hate that idea) instead than a death game anime, however the first arc of both season had a good storyline that kept me interested.

This is way, when they this spin-off series, I was happy cause even if I would have rather the original cast back, we will still have something to it while waiting for the new season (which is set to be premier in October 2018).

By the title I already knew which setting they would use. I have to admit that it wasn’t my favorite setting, I much prefer the fantasy one, but the post-apocalyptic is okay plus there is a lot of thing that was reminding me of Fatal Bullet (video game developed by Bandai NAMCO that you will eventually hear about on the blog).

Gonna be honest we you, this was one my surprise of the season, compared to previous season, I didn’t watch a lot of series and I always like having pleasant surprise. Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online was definitely my surprised show for the Spring season. As it the best? No, it’s really hard to beat a show like My Hero Academia, however the show can stand on his own unlike most of the series I watched this Spring.

I mean you don’t have to watch the other series of the franchise to enjoy this show. Yes their his mention of the event of the first and second season of Sword Art Online, but the story of Alternative is a stand-alone spin-off series that can be enjoyed be anyone even if they didn’t watch the other series from the franchise.

The series have interesting main character, LLENN is a cute loli but can be as fierce in fighting than the psychotic Pito the other main character (one of my favorite episode is Pito killing more than 20 people by herself). and supporting character that actually support the lead cast. I watch series was supporting character was just there to be there doing nothing significant, but it was the case here. Watching Alternative is like watching someone play, it’s like if you were sitting in the lounge watching the big screen with the other non-participant (or poor soul killed) of the tournament.

Of course we have an introduction episode to teach us one thing or two about the show (each I really like since it actually gave me some hint for the video game), but it wasn’t dulled it serve its purpose to tell use right from the bat what LLENN can do during the Squad Jam and what she or the other can’t do)

My only real complain about this series is not being longer or letting us see more of the other strong team. LLENN character is known as the Pink Devil and she is feared by the other however she wasn’t the only one with Pito being strong and I would have like seeing more instead of introducing character for the sole purpose to kill them later.

You I recommend this series? Yes I will, it’s not a series with a complicated storyline, but it’s still entertaining enough to be watched without being bored, plus it gave me one of the best conclusion the Spring Season 2018 had to offer.

~ Thank you for Reading ~

  1. Well…ain’t that a coincidence: I just started my bingewatch of this one today. (No kidding I really did). Hope to finish it by the end of this weekend. As you might already know by now I am a massive Sword Art Online fan, so I was already pretty hyped for this (even though it is a spin off). Reading this and having already seen the first two episodes I know I am going to be enjoying it. 😊

  2. I pretty much had similar thoughts on GGO Alternative, in that its simple story with entertaining characters makes it worth watching. I’ve grown to love GGO thanks to Sinon, and it’s nice to have a couple of new faces to associate this world of bullets with!

    • Thank you sorry if I didn’t replied earlier, for some reason WP decide that your comment was a spam…😑
I really enjoyed it, but it depend if you like the genre or no. I already new about the setting cause of the previous SAO series, however if you haven’t watched them it’s okay it’s not a must, you can watch alternative without having watched SAO before.

      • The only other one that I can think that is quite similar to SAO is Death March to a Parallel World Rhapsody. The MC is trapped in a game and he is overpowered… if you want to know more about it look on 100 Word Anime blog, they made episodic review of it… as more me I dropped but maybe you will like it.
For fantasy looking anime you can try Chain Chronicle: Light of Haeccetias (which I really like) or Gran Crest Senki
