OWLS Tour | K: The Joker and His King

Hi everyone!
Welcome to this new OWLS post! For this month the topic is….

Wait! What?
You don’t know what is OWLS?

Okay, okay, before I tell you about this month topic I will explain you what is OWLS, cause you really need to know about this awesome group.

OWLS stand for Otaku Warrior for Liberty and Self-Respect, we are a group of blogger and vlogger who promotes the acceptance of everyone regardless of their gender, ethnicity, sexuality or disabilities. Each month a new prompt is given and using the pop-culture as support, we talk about the topic.

Last month our prompt was one of the seven deadly-sin, “Pride”, and this month topic was requested by the sweet Zoe, “Mentor”

“Throughout our lives, we might have encountered someone that we admired as a role model or has guided us in some life dilemma. This mentor could be a teacher at school, a coach, a boss or team leader at work, or a family friend. Whoever it is that person impacted your life in a positive manner. For this month’s OWLS topic, we will be writing about mentors or mentorships in anime and other pop culture media. Some topics we will be exploring include how a mentorship impacted a main character’s life, the types of mentor relationships a person could have, and/or personal stories about mentors or mentorships.”

I really had to think about this one even if there was some obvious choice. After scrolling through the anime and manga I watched, I decide to go for K-Project.

K-Project also simply known as K is an original anime series, produced by the studio GoHand (Hand Shakers), counting two seasons and a movie (starting from July 2018, seven other movies will be release) different manga and light novel. The first season, aired from October 2012 to December 2012, the second season title K: Return of Kings aired from October 2015 to December 2015. The movie, K: Missing King, was released between the two seasons in July 2014. To know more about the K franchise, you can visit the Wikia fan page.

By picking up K-Project as support of the July tour, it gave me the possibility to tie it with a post that I published some days ago, since the July post is kind of a sequel for that post.
If you haven’t read the post on Fushimi and Yata friendship, you probably want to read it before, cause I explain in-depth Fushimi background which is needed to get where I’m trying to go with the present post. You can read the post here, I will wait for you…

Done?

Cool now let’s talk about what the Blue King was for Fushimi cause while the theme for the month is mentor, Munakata was more than only a mentor for Fushimi, he was more like a father figure, father Fushimi never had, someone who will guide him without putting a leash (although I wouldn’t mind putting a leash on Fushimi *cough*)

Fushimi left Homra cause he knew Munakata had more to offer than what the Red Clan and its King, Suoh Mikoto, had to offers. The first time Saruhiko met the Blue King, the latter told him that he need a secret weapon user, someone he could also use as “Joker” he said this because he knew Saruhiko was still carrying weapon despite the fact he was told to remove all of them. Munakata was the only one to notice that thus the words he said. He didn’t ask Fushimi directly since the latter was accompanied by Kusanagi, the Red Clan “lieutenant” but Fushimi and Kusanagi understand the meaning behind this.

The second time Fushimi met the Blue King in person, it was because Fushimi gave some valuable information about to former blue clansmen to Scepter 4 and Munakata wanted to meet him once again. During that meeting Fushimi was wowed by the Blue King, the latter show him something that amazed him. Fushimi has been fascinated by it and it was only the second time it was happening to him. Munakata knew what Fushimi wanted, the Blue King knew the red clansmen was hoping to be led by someone who was overwhelmingly more outstanding than him and Munakata gave him that, he gave him that sight, he gave Fushimi what he was looking for in a King.

During that same meeting, Munakata also hinted Fushimi that he might have “caught a cold” (virus sent by his cousin, Aya, to Fushimi PDA through email, that virus was giving strong hallucination to the young boy, strong enough to make him attack people cause he was seeing his late father, if you read the post about Fushimi and Yata friendship you know how bad is father was toward him), not only Munakata knew what Fushimi was looking for in a leader, but he also saw the personal problem he had and decide to help him, even if he wasn’t part of his clan.

Even before Fushimi had taken the decision to leave Homra for Scepter 4, Munakata was already showing him the way to take but without leading him by the hand. The Blue King also took this occasion to tell Fushimi he needed a special weapon user once again.

However it’s only at their third meeting, when the Blue King and to interfere against the Green King who wanted to win Fushimi over, that Fushimi finally took his decision even if it was an unconscious one.

This unconscious decision was probably helped by to factor, one Fushimi fear Mikoto, he didn’t like being around him, him a fire user, fire that once destroyed something he like, the other factor is the fact that Munakata managed to wow Fushimi with is King power. The only thing he knew from the King power was how destructive it could be, Munakata show him an other side of that power. Fushimi was also drawn toward the Blue King, he asked him if it was possible to switch clan after all.

Yata wasn’t happy about Fushimi leaving Homra, he called him a traitor, however instead of explaining why he took this decision, Fushimi mocked Yata and joined the Scepter 4.

Now that Fushimi had left Homra for Scepter 4, he was led by someone who was able to amaze him even if he clicked his tongue at him more than once, trying to pissing him off like a teenage in his rebellion period. Despite that he was loyal to his King.

With Scepter 4, Fushimi had the occasion to be useful to something, but he had to try to fit in once again, even if he really didn’t want to, this is probably one of the reason why Munakata was so lenient toward him, allowing him to have his own room while the other blues clansmen were all living in pair. He not really took him under his wing cause Munakata is a chess/shogi player and all his clansmen are pion that he move the way he want, but he still made him third-in-command, highest rank in the Scepter 4 hierarchy after the King (of course) and the lieutenant.

Munakata Reisi isn’t the type of mentor who will take the hands of his students/clansmen to show them the path they have to follow. Instead he hinted them about where they could find their answers and let them thinking by themselves making sure they not get lost in the process.

Fushimi mocked Yata for being proud to be part of the Red Clan, however Munakata became a King Fushimi could be proud of. He saw in Munakata something he didn’t see in Mikoto, someone who was using his power of King for something else than for destruction. He saw in Munakata someone who could give him a purpose, who was seeing was he could do and what he could bring to Scepter 4 someone who could also led him. The Blue King trusted his third-in-command enough to ask him to “betray” him and infiltrate the Green Clan. Fushimi did it, he did it for his King, he did it cause he knew that’s what Munakata wanted him to do. He didn’t care about being a traitor once again, HIS King wanted him to do that. The same King who gave him a purpose, who was more amazing than him.

The relation between Fushimi and Munakata is not the usual Mentor/Students relation we can found in other series like Naruto, Dragon Ball or My Hero Academia, but the Blue King was always made sure his clansmen never get lost, showing them the way to take, that what he did with Fushimi, he didn’t teach him life mysteries or how to act like a proper human being, but he shown him that it was okay to be the way he was cause Fushimi had qualities Munakata needed. Of course the joker role Fushimi played within the Blue Clan could have been played by other clansmen, however only Fushimi could have play that role the way he did and Munakata made sure he understand that.

Munakata was Fushimi mentor, he was the one who led him, who gave him a purpose in life. But Munakata was also like the father Fushimi never had, he will never said it, but the third-in-command of Scepter 4 will forever follow his King even if there is no King anymore.

This was my post for the July OWLS tour hope you enjoyed reading it cause I face some struggle while writing it, but it was still fun to write. This is one of the several thing I like about OWLS, it make me look a series in a way I would have not look at it by myself, if it wasn’t of OWLS I wouldn’t have look at Munakata role in Fushimi’s life.

Be sure to read Shoka’s post, that was published on the 18th if you haven’t yet and look out for Zoe’s post that will go up tomorrow the 20th!

If you want to take a look at past Tour, your can find all the OWLS tour round-up here.
