Cardcaptor Sakura is one of the first anime I watched, knowing it was an anime, I remember watching the french dub when it was airing on the french television, it’s also one of the first manga series I started collecting along DragonBall and Detective Conan. This series will forever have a special place in my heart and this is why I was really excited when they announce they will made a sequel to celebrate the 20 anniversary.
|Airing Date||January 2018 to June 2018|
|Season||Winter 2018/Spring 2018|
|Genre||Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Magic, Romance, Shoujo|
This new series starts at the point where the Cardcaptor Sakura ends, when twelve years old, Sakura starts junior high school along her friends, including Syaoran, who had just returned to Tomoeda. After having a dream with a mysterious cloaked figure, all of Sakura’s cards turn blank and are rendered powerless, thus she starts her quest to find out what is wrong. In doing so, Sakura and her allies discover and capture new Clear Cards using a new key.

This brand new Cardcaptor series begins where the previous one ends, at least the way the manga end cause even if I rewatched the complete series one of two years ago I fail the remember who the series ends… anyway the manga end on Sakura walking to get to her middle-school and on her way she meet Syaoran who is back from Hong Kong for good. Follow a really happy and sweet moment that made me tear up a little.
So we are back with the original cast or almost since Rika going to a different middle-school and Eriol moved back to England, not long after his house was destroyed and a park was builded, however the house is back and young girl name Akiho moved in with her mysterious butler Yuna D. Kaito. And since we are talking about Cardcaptor Sakura, soon as someone move in Tomeda, weird shit start to happen. First all the Sakura Card go blank, then a new key appear and finally new card, Clear Card, start to make some mess around the city
If i were to talk about the Clear Card Arc without mentioning any name, pretty sure you would have the feeling that I’m talking about the Clow Cards Arc or the Sakura Card Arc, since the formula is the same…same…same even some of the new card have a Sakura Cards counterpart. It’s useless to say most of the series was predictable.
Is it really a bad thing they kept the same formula? Yes and No, Yes cause most of the people who watched this new arc are the long time fan of the series who was the targeted audience at the time of the first two arcs. This audience grew up so we could expect the series would follow.
However it’s neither a bad thing since they keep the same targeted audience, probably in the hope of getting new fans, in other word I feel like they put the focus on the potential new fans instead of the people who were already fan of the series. The formula worked in the past so why change it?
I know I might look like I didn’t enjoy the series, I did enjoy it despite the fact that I could pretty much predict most of the stuff that was happening, I loved seeing Sakura with new cloth everyday. I watch to many series where the character wear the exact same thing every single day so seeing the cute little Sakura in her cute outfit made me smile and Tomoyo enthusiasm about making her new costume just warmed my heart. I was happy to see Toya back and to see him interacting with Yue and seeing Yukito interacting with Kero-chan. I love the fact that our little yellow plush have a better relationship with the Snow Bunny instead than the Moon Guardian…
I liked the series, really like all those memories even if one episode for this new series was almost a copy of one episode of the first arc. I like how they were consistent about the anime without mixing manga related stuff in, like the fact that Fujitaka have magic power (not as powerful as Sakura) at the end of the manga series, but have none in the anime since there was some difference between the two ending.
If I sound bitter about the series it’s mostly cause of the ending if we can call that an ending. You can clearly see there is something else coming, you can feel it since there is still a lot of mysteries, you see it’s the end of an arc, but it’s still left a really bad after taste. The end of the last episode of Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc, reminds me of the last episode of Gangsta. It look unfinished even if it technically finish since the arc it done. For the moment, we just have to wait for the next arc and I seriously can’t tell when it will come since the manga itself stopped at chapters 13 and it’s been a year (or almost) we didn’t get any update..
Now the big question…
Will I recommend the series? Yes but only once the series is completely done, like when all the questions find the answers and of course if the person doesn’t mind repetitive story, so yes I will recommend it… Of course I will make sure they have seen the two previous arc and the movies before.
This was my review on the Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card arc. Did you watch the series? What did you think of it?
