OWLS – Flying The Great Condor Across a New World

Hello everyone!
Welcome to a new OWL post!

If you are new around here, you might not know about the most awesome group of the internet so let me make your education.

OWLS stand for Otaku Warrior for Liberty and Self-Respect. We are a group of blogger and vlogger who promote the acceptance of everyone regardless of their ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality and disabilities. Each month we can a new prompt and we need to use the pop-culture to explore it.

For August, the prompt is Journey,

“We have all heard this saying in some shape or form: “Life is a journey.” We travel down a path in hope that we reach a goal or destination, but the travel in getting there isn’t always easy. Along the way, we encounter some personal struggles. It is in those moments where we must overcome an adversity to complete our journey or take a different route or path instead. In this month’s OWLS post, we will be discussing the personal journeys of pop culture creators, icons, and characters. We will explore the journeys that these characters went through, discuss the process and experiences they had on their journeys, what they discover about themselves, or share our own personal journeys.”

I’m pretty excited about this one since I’m the one who requested it. When I suggest this prompt I have a really clear idea of the series I will choice to explore it even if it’s a quite old series, The Mysterious City of Gold

The Mysterious City of Gold is a french-japanese series that aired between June 1982 and June 1983 (I feel suddenly really old even if I was watching the first re-run), the series produced by the Studio Pierrot (Naruto, Black Clover, Tokyo Ghoul) follow the adventure of the young Esteban, the Children of the Sun, who is travelling across South America, looking for the lost city of gold.

I did a brief post about it when I did the short post series of TBT where I was talking about my favorite series from my childhood and now it is time to look at my childhood series under a new angle.

Being an orphan not knowing our origin can bring a lot of question, but when you are raised by the caring father of the Barcelona cathedral, the question about your origin might only comes when the one who raised you passed away. This is what happen to the young twelve years old Esteban when Father Rodriguez passed away due to illness. On his deathbed, the old man tell Esteban the story of how he came to Spain, but it Esteban didn’t really care about the old man story, the only thing he had in mind was how sad he was to have lost the man who raised him.

However his curiosity was light up when Mendoza spoke to him and tell him that he was the man who saved him while he was infant. The ship on the one he was as an infant with his father sank and he was saved just in time. Mendoza told him it was a possibility his father could have been still alive but to find out the young man would have to follow him to the new world.

Esteban leave Barcelona behind to go with Mendoza ,who is looking for the Mysterious City of Gold, to find his father, to find where he is from, however he found much more than that.

Friends Against All the Odds

Esteban journey start on the Esperanza, ship that will let him to the new continent, on this ship he meet the young Zia who has been kidnapped by the commander Gomez who like Mendoza want to found the City of Gold. They quickly became friend since Esteban in Zia eyes wasn’t one of those European who only think of gold, he was a child coming from the same place as her and she trusted him right away and she told him that her only wish was to go back to his father even if she wasn’t sure of where he was. After a storm, the Esperanza sank and our group (Esteban, Zia, Mendoza, Pedro and Sanchez) strand on an island situated in the pacific.

Then came Tao a young boy living alone the island (which is most probably the Galapagos Island) after the death of his father a few years ago. Tao doesn’t know anything about the modern world (if we can say 1534 is modern), he never saw a fire arms of his life but he still has a lot of knowledge about his ancestor who were the people of the lost continent of MU.

After discovering a mysterious ship hidden underground (just accept that without asking question please), named Solaris they reach the continent. Once on the south american continent, Esteban and his friend will meet new people, people with a different culture than his people who will show him and his friends a new world

Learning in the New World

After losing the mysterious ship named Solaris, Esteban and his friend travelled toward to south to reach Zia’s village, trying to avoid to get caught by Gomez and his men, however the villager escaped for an unknown location, despite the fact the young Zia wasn’t unable to find his father, it didn’t stop the kids and they found something else, knowledge. Through their journey, the group met many people and see many thing, like a solar dial and a heavenly dial hidden in the mountain, visit lost cities guard by deities and heard various legend about how the land came to be. They learned about different customs of the different tribe/village the came across, interpreting the various gods with the help of a mask hanged on a pole in Amazonia or throwing jewel in a lake as offering in the Mayan country. They saw animals and plants they never seen before like anaconda, jaguar or giant water-lily. They also learn one of the most important lesson which to not judge the other cause they had different beliefs.

By meeting new people, Esteban learn more about the Mysterious Cities of Gold and eventually reach the Cities of Gold and its mysterious priest who teach more to Esteban than new thing, the man brought to the young man a comfortable feeling, the same as a father will give to his son.

Finding More Than What We Look For

Esteban will never know that he had found his father, but through his journey he found so much more, like forever friend and learn about thing he would have never learn if he would have stayed in Barcelona.

When watching the Mysterious Cities of Gold we follow the journey of three young friends through the danger across the South Continent to the Central Continent, however this journey wasn’t only their,it was also our journey, a journey learning about lost civilization since each episode had a short documentary regarding the Inca and Maya civilization. I watched this series more than once and while the visual is from the 80’and would need to be clean, I’m always curious about those lost civilization, following Esteban, Zia and Tao adventure makes me dream, dream about what was found and was is not found yet.

While watching the Mysterious Cities of Gold and seeing the character discovering the New World, I also found a story about friendship and trust and dreamy landscapes and fabulous constructions.

This was my OWLS post for the month of August, hope you enjoyed it since it’s not a series a lot of people know about. If you have the chance to watch this old yet entertaining series, I would suggest you to give it a try.

Don’t forget to read Scott’s post which was published on the 22nd and keep an eyes for Dylan’s video which will go up on the 25th.

~ Thank you for Reading ~

  1. I remember watching this as a kid and it was so addictive because you really felt like you were on the journey with Esteban and missing an episode felt like getting left behind. Such a great title for the theme.
