“In the distant future, humanity has been driven to near-extinction by giant beasts known as Klaxosaurs, forcing the surviving humans to take refuge in massive fortress cities called Plantations. Children raised here are trained to pilot giant mechas known as FranXX—the only weapons known to be effective against the Klaxosaurs—in boy-girl pairs. Bred for the sole purpose of piloting these machines, these children know nothing of the outside world and are only able to prove their existence by defending their race. Hiro, an aspiring FranXX pilot, has lost his motivation and self-confidence after failing an aptitude test. Skipping out on his class’ graduation ceremony, Hiro retreats to a forest lake, where he encounters a mysterious girl with two horns growing out of her head. She introduces herself by her codename Zero Two, which is known to belong to an infamous FranXX pilot known as the “Partner Killer.” Before Hiro can digest the encounter, the Plantation is rocked by a sudden Klaxosaur attack. Zero Two engages the creature in her FranXX, but it is heavily damaged in the skirmish and crashes near Hiro. Finding her partner dead, Zero Two invites Hiro to pilot the mecha with her, and the duo easily defeats the Klaxosaur in the ensuing fight. With a new partner by his side, Hiro has been given a chance at redemption for his past failures, but at what cost?”

I was casually browsing through the upcoming series for the Winter 2018 anime season when I came across Darling in the Franxx cover picture which made me curious cause it was pretty, I like the artwork, I read the synopsis and despite the genre being Mecha (I’m not normally interested in it) I was still curious to see what the show had to offers.

*Before continuing, you have to know that I haven’t seen Neo Genesis Evangelion (yet) so don’t expect any comparison between the two show.*

What I was saying again? Oh yes I was curious by what the show as to offer, however I should have be careful of all the sign that was telling be the show would be a hot mess, a show where I would be more interesting in the side story than the main one.First the fact that it’s made by three different studio which probably doesn’t help, plus the mix of genre, while some studio could have probably pull this off, here is was just a mess, if “clusterfuck” was a genre, Darling in the Franxx would be labeled with it.
In my opinion the main problem with the series was the story itself, if they would have keep it as a fight between the Klaxosaur and the Human, I think it would have been a decent series (at least better than what we got) but nope they halfway decide the Klaxosaur wasn’t a worthy villain, in needed to be someone else, like the one who looked over the kid and the human kinds – “ Papa”Plus they feel the need to throw a kind of Slice of Life side story with the kid learning how to be human without the help of the few adult around them and their protector, I have to say this what was kept me interested, I just wanted to know what will happen with them, minus Hiro and Zero Two cause their ending was written in the sky. I frankly was more interested in the side character than the main one (Goro was such a good boy)

While watching the series, I really had the feeling the writer had no fucking clue what they were doing, I read fanfic with a better narrative and execution than this.At least the series gain some point on the visual department (we had some awesome fight) and OST, Darling background music was one of the best of the season.

It is useless to say that I will definitely not recommend the series to anyone, unless they really feel like watching a series that doesn’t where it going.

~ Thank you for reading ~

  1. This is a series that I was in the middle of watching, but then a lot of stuff in real life happened and I didn’t go back to it. I have seen about 7 or 8 episodes I think. While I didn’t dislike it as much as you did, I also didn’t really think it was pretty good either. Sounds like I have definitely no real reason to get back to this one. Oh well…can’t win them all 😊

  2. The plot is definitely a problem. I do however agree with you on Goro.
In the end, I really found Darling in the Franxx a frustrating watch. There are some good moments and some good ideas but the overall narrative is just a complete mess and the execution is questionable.

    • I normally don’t always notice if there is a problem with the narrative, I mean as long as I enjoy the show anything can happen, so for me to say the plot was all over the place means a lot.
I still don’t know what they try to achieved with this show.
