“ At first glance, the city of Fukuoka seems like a peaceful one, but under the surface, crime is running rampant. The city’s Hakata ward is home to the professionals of the underworld: professional killers, detectives, informants, professional revenge seekers, those skilled in torture, and more. And according to urban legend, a “killer of professional killers” has shown up in the city.”
I was casually browsing the upcoming anime for the anime winter season when I came across Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen synopsis which really intrigued me and after watching the trailer, I hit the PTW button while crossing finger that I would be able to the watch it on one of the streaming service available in my country.Thankfully Crucnhyroll (or FUNImation don’t know anymore with the split) pick up the series so I could give it a try.
A lot of people who watch the series, compare it to Durarara, but since I haven’t watch the series (yet) I can’t compared to it, so if I was to compare it to a series I would probably go with Cowboy Bebop, I did had a strong Cowboy Bebop feel when watch the series. Both have a lot of similarities, the way the story is build up with side plot leading to a bigger one and the jazzy ost really bring the two series together and we can’t put aside the fact the main antagonist is an important part of one of the main character past.
Beside having an interesting plot an a great ost, the series also have a great characters cast which give us great interaction. The interaction between Banba and Ling were a pure delight and throw some sassy remark from Enokida the hacker and everything become perfect, plus with have a rivals ( yup like a generic shounen) that bring some funny moment that made me laugh more than I should have. The series knew how to use its character to make the atmosphere less heavy by balancing the more serious full of blood moment with more light one.
I enjoy how the series does not only concentrate on the main plot, Banba and Ling doesn’t pass their time running and killing people, they also have time for themselves, I guess hitmen and private detective need some time to evacuate stress and our duo was doing that by playing baseball (Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens is a sport anime cosplaying a mystery one)
I really enjoy watching the series, in fact I would have taken more than twelves episode of that show. I would recommend this series to anyone how enjoyed Durarara and/or Cowboy Bebop and are looking for a series similar to those two shows.
